Online Chemistry Labs | Learning Objectives


This experiment is an introductory level lab that introduces the student to the concept of density and the means for determining the average density of a regularly shaped object. Samples of various types of plastic, pure aluminum, and gold alloy are provided. The student measures the mass of each object. Certain dimensions are provided and others are left to be determined. The plastic cube requires the student to identify the type of plastic from the density, while the gold alloy provides an opportunity to identify the type of gold alloy used in jewelry (carat). Additional problems involving density are presented.


Learning Objectives:

  1. Become familiar with the concept of the extensive property of density.
  2. Be able to density from the measured mass, given certain dimensions of a regular object.
  3. Be able to determine certain dimensions given the density after measuring the mass.
  4. Be able to identify the composition or identity of a material after determining its density.
  5. Be able to answer questions involving density of materials.
  6. Be able to propose an experimental procedure for determining the density of an irregular object.
